Owl Creek School

Summary:

Owl Creek School is an elementary school located in Fayetteville, Arkansas, serving 1,024 students in grades K-6. While part of the highly-ranked Fayetteville School District, Owl Creek has consistently ranked in the middle range of Arkansas elementary schools, maintaining a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Owl Creek School faces some significant academic challenges, with proficiency rates in core subjects like English Language Arts, Reading, Mathematics, and Science consistently lower than the Fayetteville district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Owl Creek's proficiency rates were around 32-34%, compared to the district's 46-51% and the state's 34-37%. The performance gap is particularly pronounced in 3rd and 4th-grade math, where Owl Creek lags the district by 19-20 percentage points. Additionally, Owl Creek has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 62.3% to 68.6% over the past few years, suggesting a higher concentration of economically disadvantaged students. The school also has a higher student-teacher ratio compared to other nearby Fayetteville and Farmington schools.

Interestingly, the other Fayetteville elementary schools, such as Happy Hollow, Butterfield, Holcomb, and Washington, generally outperform Owl Creek School on test scores, with proficiency rates 10-20 percentage points higher. The two Farmington elementary schools (Bob Folsom and Jerry Pop Williams) that are relatively close to Owl Creek also outperform it on test scores, despite having lower percentages of free and reduced-price lunch recipients. Despite Owl Creek's higher per-student spending of $11,108 in the 2018-2019 school year, this has not translated into improved academic performance compared to its peers.

Open Quote I have two children that went k-6 at Owl Creek Elementary and Middle. The rating here doesn’t match up to our experience. My kids received a great education here. The staff is fantastic. Close Quote

Open Quote We have had a wonderful first year at Owl Creek! The teachers are so involved, the PTO hosts the best events, and our kid is excelling socially and educationally here. We were concerned starting public school because he has a sensory processing disorder, but he has been supported every step of the way with his teacher here. Thank you! Close Quote

Open Quote If your child has a slight disability this is not the school for you, my son is very well behaved makes straight A's and always scores a couple of grade levels higher during testing however he has SPD with this he has an issue with pressure (meaning it's difficult for him to sit properly in his chair) he also has trouble processing multi step directions witch we communicated with his teacher. However his teacher decided to perceive this as a behavioral issue. My son is a people pleaser and wants to do what is expected of him so being told to pull his card everyday for these minor mistakes caused him to go into depression and he began to self harm. We kept meeting with his teacher and then the school we asked them to please follow his IEP but they felt this portion wasn't very important. This became such an issue that we had to threaten court. We soon moved to a neighboring town and are now very happy. Two years later we met a couple who was having trouble with their daughters teacher. The teacher was getting upset at their daughter for not following directions. the parents found out she was partly deaf. Even after finding this out and beginning the process of hearing aids they continued having problems with this teacher and school. Come to find out this was the same teacher. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
