La Joya Community High School

I’m just gonna be honest based on my experience at I was a new student to the school and honestly didn’t have the best welcome to this besides a couple of teachers and administrators. This school in my opinion school is very judgmental. Majority not all of course of the students seem to be lost in their own world and be against each other. Their is a lot of tension that students have with each other and even some teachers here causing to have problems with the school atmosphere. I mean my first day the students joked about how awful the school is and I have witnessed many fights go down here. Then, the teachers based on my experience besides Mr. Song, Dr. Fuller, and Mr. Vairo who my great at what they teach the teachers at this school don’t have the best reputation I got a glimpse of that as many are their just to earn a lousy paycheck instead of teacher or many are there to joke and make fun of the students instead of providing guidance when struggling in the subject. How can a student feel confident or even think highly of themselves is the teacher puts them on blast for asking for help or puts the whole class on blast just because majority don’t get it. It’s truly saddening to see how low some teachers go here. Honestly, I’m my opinion the best way to get a decent education here is to either get lucky with a certain teacher or to take the AP and Honors classes offered here in which honestly isn’t even that bad. I got to give it to them those who take the advanced courses do put value into what the student is learning and want the best for them along you’re put in with students who are there cause they want to be there. Now the administration here like counselors and the front office aren’t all that bad, props to Ms. Oxford and Mrs. Madrid. They were probably the most welcoming people on campus when I got there and did everything they could to make my needs at this school possible. Now, to recap this school honestly had it good during the first years it opened in 2004 and sadly seemed like it fell. It’s an pretty large and nice looking campus but the campus is starting to look outdated and classrooms are in desperate need of repair, renovation, and resources. Along, I can’t blame the new principal she’s trying everything she can to make it positive and a safe environment for those who attend but I’m sorry to put it out there but the former principal who left to lead another new high school in the district seemed to have been one of the causes of the fall of this school as she didn’t take her leadership role of the school seriously. I feel like some changes should be put in place but also try to reassemble this school. I believe it could be done as it happened to Copper Canyon High when Mr. Potts took leadership of the school transforming it into one of the best schools in the district and one of the greatest principals in the district. This school has potential it’s offers many clubs introducing students to new things, it has a pretty good sports program as well, many students here are able to be themselves such as sexuality and the school is pretty diverse. Not only that this school offers the most AP and Honors classes in the district and is large enough to be able to bring new elective classes to the school. This school should be a highlight of the student but sadly to me remains as the worst school in the district when it comes to reputation, atmosphere, and education. For those thinking of sending your kids here please think about you could send them and have them give it try. If your kid enjoys it here let them stay, but if they aren’t enjoying it or you as a parent have a bad feeling about this school please listen to them and think about sending your kids in which they would be comfortable. There are many other options such as open enrollment at other schools or charter schools around the city. So, in conclusion this school needs to pull themselves up the leadership needs to be improved a to get a better atmosphere better teachers more modern teaching.
