Aileen Colburn Elementary

Summary:

Aileen Colburn Elementary is a public elementary school in Atwater, California, serving 412 students in grades K-6. The school is part of the Atwater Elementary District, which is ranked 737 out of 1,568 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Aileen Colburn Elementary consistently performs below the district and state averages in academic assessments, with particularly low proficiency rates in Science and English Language Arts. The school's Hispanic and English Language Learner students perform relatively better than other subgroups, but the White, Special Education, and low-income students struggle, ranking in the bottom 30-40% of California elementary schools. Additionally, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 7.8% in 2017-2018 to 10.5% in 2022-2023, which likely contributes to the overall academic underperformance.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Peggy Heller Elementary, Bellevue Elementary, and schools in the Winton District, Aileen Colburn Elementary generally performs lower academically. However, the school's English Language Learner and Hispanic student populations perform better than the nearby schools, suggesting the school may be providing more targeted support for these subgroups. Addressing the high chronic absenteeism and the socioeconomic challenges faced by the predominantly low-income student population will be crucial for improving overall student outcomes at Aileen Colburn Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I use to go to this school when i was young, and the atmosphere and teachers were great. if i could do it again, there wouldn't be any other school i would have gone to. Most memorable teacher was my third grade teacher who was great. She really cared about her students and i remember trying really hard to beat her 1 minute math quizzes, which i did and got to go to frosty freezes to get a banana split. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
