Sequoia Middle

Summary:

Sequoia Middle is a public middle school located in Newbury Park, California, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 849 students. It is part of the Conejo Valley Unified School District, which is ranked 292 out of 1,568 districts in California and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Sequoia Middle consistently performs above the state average in Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics, as well as the CAST Science assessments. However, the school's performance is slightly below the district average in these areas. Sequoia Middle performs particularly well for Asian and multi-racial students, ranking in the top 25% of California middle schools for these subgroups. Unfortunately, the school's performance for Hispanic and English Language Learner students is below average, ranking in the bottom 50% of California middle schools. Additionally, Sequoia Middle has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 5.5% in 2018-2019 to 20.8% in 2021-2022, which is notably higher than the district average of 14.6% at nearby Los Cerritos Middle.

Sequoia Middle performs well compared to the other middle schools in the Conejo Valley Unified School District, but lags behind the high-performing Medea Creek Middle in the neighboring Oak Park Unified School District. This suggests that Sequoia Middle could benefit from learning best practices from its higher-performing peers. Additionally, Sequoia Middle has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (30.86%) compared to the nearby schools, which range from 21.47% to 29.56%, indicating that the school may need to provide additional support and resources to address the needs of its economically disadvantaged population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote They are not helpful in the least if your child doesn't fit into the cookie cutter mold of a "normal" child. My child has an extremely high IQ and ADHD. His grades are C's and D's and is now struggling behaviorally. I have had several meetings with the school as well as constant contact with most of his teachers and they are not willing to make any sort of accommodations or help him at all. They see nothing wrong with getting C's and D's as this is "passing". Also, a child can bully or physically harm another child and the school does nothing. But make sure you don't forget your red pen or toss a toy on the floor before school even starts! Major detention for that! I am planning on doing what several other parents have done who had similar situations. Pull him out and homeschool. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
