King City Arts Magnet

Summary:

King City Arts Magnet is an elementary school located in King City, California, serving 475 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the King City Union District, which is ranked 1394 out of 1568 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

King City Arts Magnet faces significant challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates that have risen from 12.8% in 2017-2018 to 35.2% in 2022-2023, well above the state average of 15.4%. The school's test scores are consistently lower than state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with only 27.19% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy and 21.36% in mathematics, compared to 47.04% and 35.54% statewide, respectively. While male and Hispanic students perform better than their female and English Language Learner counterparts, the school's overall rankings for these subgroups are still in the bottom half of California elementary schools.

When compared to nearby schools in the same district, such as Del Rey Elementary and Santa Lucia Elementary, the performance gap is not as stark, as these schools also struggle with low test scores and high chronic absenteeism rates. This suggests that the challenges faced by King City Arts Magnet are not unique but rather reflective of the broader educational landscape in the region, which may be heavily influenced by the high percentage of students (88.63%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The Superintendents get a rate increase, yet ask the teachers to take a 1.5% pay cut and one school teacher group will loose two months wages this summer going from a 12 to 10 month pay schedule. It is flat out extortion and blackmail to hold the decision of the impasse of the contract over the heads of the teacher. The upper staff need to give back as well! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
