George Ellery Hale Charter Academy

Summary:

George Ellery Hale Charter Academy is a public charter middle school located in Woodland Hills, California, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,887 students. It is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which is ranked 871 out of 1,568 districts in California and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

George Ellery Hale Charter Academy consistently ranks in the top 20% of California middle schools, with a statewide ranking between 345-588 over the past 10 years. The school's performance on Smarter Balanced Assessments is significantly higher than the Los Angeles Unified and California state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, 61.22% of students at George Ellery Hale Charter Academy were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 43.06% in Los Angeles Unified and 47.04% statewide. The school also performs exceptionally well for certain student subgroups, such as African American and Special Education students, ranking in the top 20% and top 16% of California middle schools, respectively, in recent years.

However, the school faces some challenges, including an increase in chronic absenteeism, from 6.2% in 2017-2018 to 21.0% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average. Additionally, the relatively lower percentage of low-socioeconomic status students at George Ellery Hale Charter Academy compared to the surrounding schools suggests the school may not be as socioeconomically diverse as the local community. While the school outperforms nearby traditional public middle schools in the Los Angeles Unified District, it lags behind high-performing charter and public schools outside the district, such as James Jordan Middle and Medea Creek Middle.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son has been attending Hale for two years and it has been the worst experience of our lives. They constantly harass my son unnecessarily. He has been racial Profiled and discriminated against. The counseling office is the worst. They allowed another student to continue to call my son derogatory names and made excuses for the other student. This is unacceptable. They constantly pull my son out of class and search his belongings like he’s Some sort of criminal. And 99 of the time my child has been falsely accused with no apologies. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
