Rooftop Elementary

Summary:

Rooftop Elementary is a public K-8 school in San Francisco, California, with a total enrollment of 536 students. This high-performing school consistently ranks in the top 25-30% of California elementary schools, with strong academic achievement across all grade levels.

Rooftop Elementary's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics are significantly higher than the district and state averages. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's ELA proficiency rate was 58.58%, compared to 53.73% for the San Francisco Unified School District and 47.04% for the state of California. In Mathematics, Rooftop's proficiency rate was 54.09%, compared to 45.59% for the district and 35.54% for the state. The school's performance is generally stronger than nearby schools in the district, such as Clarendon Alternative Elementary, Grattan Elementary, and Alvarado Elementary. However, the Chinese Immersion School at DeAvila, also within the San Francisco Unified School District, outperforms Rooftop Elementary in both academic achievement and student subgroup performance.

While Rooftop Elementary performs well overall, the school faces some challenges. The school has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 11.6% in 2018-2019 to 35.4% in 2021-2022. Additionally, the lower rankings of its Asian and Multi-racial student subgroups suggest potential equity issues that may need to be addressed. In comparison, the nearby Thomas Edison Charter Academy, a public charter school, significantly underperforms Rooftop Elementary and the district in both ELA and Mathematics proficiency rates.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote On this school evaluation site and others, I notice they list the student teacher ratio as 16-1 which sounds great, but I think is misleading. Schools may have additional credentialed teachers who do not have 'regular' classrooms but might do pull-out services of students w/special needs. When they are included in the mix, it makes it look like a lower ratio than in reality.

At Rooftop & perhaps other SFUSD schools, I believe K-3 has 22 students. There is talk by the district to raise this # to 25 students. 4-5th have about 32 students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
