Despite being part of the West Haven School District, which is ranked 124 out of 158 districts in the state, Edith E. Mackrille School stands out as a high-performing institution with consistently strong academic outcomes.

The school's academic performance is particularly impressive, with 87.8% of 4th-grade students proficient or better in both English Language Arts and Mathematics, significantly outpacing the district (39.1% and 45.9%, respectively) and the state (48.8% and 48.3%). The school also has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11.1 to 13.8 over the past three years, suggesting a more favorable learning environment for students.

Despite the school's academic success, it faces some unique challenges, including a high percentage of students (44.59% to 53.16%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which is higher than nearby schools like Live Oaks School (25.09%) and Race Brook School (15.42%). However, the school's effective resource allocation, as evidenced by its high spending per student (around $15,500), suggests that it is well-equipped to address the unique needs of its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote When you take a good school in a failing district and tear it apart, spreading the good teachers thinly amongst the district instead of maintaining a good example for the other schools to follow - you destroy the entire system. We are very unhappy that the district has ruined such a great school! Still, this does not account for any star removed from the rating I give the school...

* A star removed for being very low tech - most teachers do not even check their email more than once a week. While the office has a system already established for communicating with parents via email, they do not use it to full extent and continue to waste paper and other resources which impact the school's budget negatively.
* Another star removed for being illiterate while promoting literacy - the teachers and, especially, the principal should stand as good examples for the students they lead. This includes proper spelling and grammar in their work. As a parent, I find myself correcting simple mistakes which should not have happened and sending them back highlighted to my student's teacher. However, this problem is ripe within the office staff as well, as I find simple spelling mistakes in a wide variety of documents from the principal (Judith Drenzek) and her office staff.
* A third star removed for an overall lack of communication between the school and parents. While there is a monthly newsletter and frequent paper announcements sent home with the students, these do not adequately explain the various activities and events which happen at the school. Often, for instance, the newsletter will include photographs of various children engaged in an activity with a one line explanation naming the event or trying to be humorous. However, one will find no explanation of the event nor its importance. Likewise, there are several school-wide activities which take place, such as "Field Day," which go unexplained to parents who do not directly participate. One must be a part of the daily school routine to understand what one's children go through, regardless of their work schedule or other chores.
* Unfortunately, a side effect of the district's push to improve itself brings us to a fourth star removed. The push is to "teach to the test" for improving results in the standardized testing. The result, as in any other school which implements such a priority, is that the students learn to pass a test by giving memorized answers rather than learn to think, be creative and solve problems for themselves. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
