Bradford Elementary School

Summary:

Southside Elementary School is a public elementary school in Starke, Florida, serving 627 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Bradford District, which is ranked 49 out of 68 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Southside Elementary faces several key challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, lower test scores compared to state and district averages, and a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math were below the state and district averages. While Southside's performance is generally lower than the state and district, some nearby schools like Lawtey Elementary and Starke Elementary also struggle with similar issues, including high chronic absenteeism and lower test scores.

Interestingly, Southside Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to some nearby schools, with a higher percentage of African American and Hispanic students. The school also has relatively high spending per student, ranging from $8,426 to $12,095 over the past few years, which is higher than the state average and some nearby schools. These factors suggest that Southside Elementary may be serving a population with greater socioeconomic challenges, which could be contributing to the school's lower academic performance.

Open Quote The teachers don't put in enough effort as to helping the children learn and achieve their goals they also favor certain children's while others are left behind and children with learning disabilities struggles the most because their needs aren't being met by the teachers putting in effort to help these kids learn they stick theming a normal classroom and expect them to keep up with kids that don't have learning disabilities, it's like these children's are left to defend for themselves and it's heartbreaking what the school system, teachers and society has become and then they wonder why that school is below average Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
