Sawgrass Bay Elementary School

Summary:

Sawgrass Bay Elementary School is a public elementary school in Clermont, Florida, serving 735 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Lake District, which is ranked 32 out of 68 districts in Florida and is rated 3 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Sawgrass Bay has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (43.81%) and African American (14.42%) students. However, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 11.6% in 2019-2020 to 30.8% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the nearby schools. Academically, Sawgrass Bay's test scores are generally lower than the district and state averages across various subjects and grade levels, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math 4-10 percentage points below the district and state averages in 2023-2024. Additionally, Sawgrass Bay has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (41.63%) compared to the nearby Imagine Schools At South Lake and Pinecrest Academy Four Corners, which range from 16.44% to 62.35%.

Sawgrass Bay's performance has declined over the years, as evidenced by its statewide ranking dropping from 989 out of 2,064 Florida elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 1,219 out of 2,256 in 2023-2024, with a consistent 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. The nearby charter schools generally outperform Sawgrass Bay in terms of test scores, chronic absenteeism, and statewide rankings, despite serving a more diverse student population. The higher rates of chronic absenteeism and free/reduced lunch at Sawgrass Bay may be contributing to the school's lower academic performance, and the higher spending per student at Sawgrass Bay does not seem to translate into better outcomes. Addressing these challenges through targeted interventions and support could help Sawgrass Bay Elementary School improve student outcomes and better serve the local community.

Open Quote Sawgrass Bay Elementary is an ok school, not great. The office staff is rude.
The administration is short with Hispanic parents. Teachers are good, but can't
do too much with students who are disrupting the class. Administration will not
remove students who are spoiling it for the rest of the kids. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
