Central High School

Summary:

Central High School is a public high school located in Macon, Georgia, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 844 students. The school is part of the Bibb County School District, which is ranked 173 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Central High School consistently underperforms compared to the state and county averages on the Georgia Milestones Assessments. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school had only 31.5% of students proficient or better in American Literature and Composition, compared to the state average of 42% and the Bibb County average of 20.6%. The school's four-year graduation rate has improved, increasing from 80.5% in 2018-2019 to 90.1% in 2021-2022, but it still lags behind some nearby high schools like Rutland High (81.4%) and Howard High (84.5%). Additionally, Central High School has a 100% free and reduced-price lunch rate, indicating a high percentage of students from low-income families, which is significantly higher than the state and county averages.

When comparing Central High School to the other high schools in the Bibb County district, it becomes evident that they all share similar challenges in terms of academic performance, graduation rates, and socioeconomic status. This suggests that the district-wide factors, such as funding, resources, and policies, may be contributing to the overall underperformance of these schools. Despite the challenges, Central High School has shown some positive trends, such as the improvement in graduation rates, indicating that with targeted interventions and support, the school may be able to address its academic deficiencies and better serve its student population.

Open Quote I love Central High School. I love the students and my fellow faculty who sincerly care about their studetns. As much as I would like to score higher I cannot. The teachers are overleoaded with uncesssary work that is said to help learning but in actuality lowers the quality of our classrooms because of the excessive burdens emposed. They would see a remarkable improvment in student performance and teacher satisfaction if they simply backed off of their teachers and let them do what they have already been trained to do. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
