Hightower Trail Elementary School

Summary:

Hightower Trail Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Conyers, Georgia, part of the Rockdale County School District. With 533 students, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools over the past 10 years, currently at 997 out of 1,248 schools.

Hightower Trail Elementary faces significant challenges in improving student achievement. The school consistently underperforms the Rockdale County and Georgia state averages on the Milestones Assessments, with only 28.1% of 3rd graders proficient or better in ELA compared to 26.9% in Rockdale County and 38.4% statewide. Additionally, Hightower Trail has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 62.87% to 80.68% over the past 3 years, significantly higher than the state average. Despite higher spending per student, between $10,239 and $10,794, the school's performance remains poor.

Comparing Hightower Trail to nearby schools highlights the potential for improvement. The elementary schools in the neighboring Walton County district, such as Walnut Grove Elementary and Sharon Elementary, significantly outperform Hightower Trail and the Rockdale County schools on test scores, despite serving student populations with similar free/reduced lunch rates. This suggests that the challenges faced by Hightower Trail and the broader Rockdale County district may be systemic, requiring a comprehensive review of educational strategies, resource allocation, and support systems for students and teachers.

Open Quote This is an awesome school. You can't find a better staff than the one at this school. The teachers are caring, trust worthy, educated and basically on top of their game. I haven't met one person in this school environment that I didn't like. This school is always striving for the best....not only from the students but from the staff also. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
