Oxon Hill Middle has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of Maryland middle schools, maintaining a 1-star rating as well.

Academically, Oxon Hill Middle consistently underperforms the state and district averages on standardized tests, with only 27.7% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and just 5.5% proficient or better in Mathematics. The school's performance is particularly low for its Asian and Hispanic student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 10-20% of Maryland middle schools in these categories.

Oxon Hill Middle also has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 66.55% to 82.27% over the past three school years, significantly higher than the 43.24% to 72.87% range at surrounding schools. This suggests the school is serving a predominantly low-income community, which may contribute to the academic challenges it faces. Overall, Oxon Hill Middle's persistent underperformance, particularly for its Asian and Hispanic students, highlights the need for a comprehensive review of the school's instructional practices, resource allocation, and support systems to better serve its diverse student population and improve educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote OHMS has multiple language programs, an Amazing Science program that is integrated into all aspects of learning. The writing program incorporates topics related to science and STEM. The school teaches Racial Equity and Social justice as well as current issues and topics. The History program tells both sides of the story , incorporates US and Global historical issues. OHMS has a Junior Honor Society , sports, Art programs , music and more. My child feels safe and connected at school. We are happy with the school and administration. When issues can't be resolved at the school level I have had success sending my concerns to the PGCPS Board of Education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
