Edgar Middle School

Summary:

Edgar Middle School is a highly successful public middle school located in Metuchen, New Jersey, serving grades 5-8 with a total enrollment of 765 students. The school is part of the Metuchen Public School District, which is ranked 72 out of 613 districts in New Jersey and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Edgar Middle School consistently ranks among the top middle schools in New Jersey, with students performing significantly better than the state average on NJSLA assessments across all grade levels and subject areas. The school's proficiency rates often exceed 70% in English Language Arts and 50% in Mathematics, and it ranks particularly well for Hispanic students, special education students, and both female and male students. Additionally, Edgar Middle School maintains relatively low chronic absenteeism rates and has a very low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a focus on equity and inclusive practices that support the success of all students.

When compared to nearby middle schools, such as Samuel E. Shull Middle School in Perth Amboy and Fords Middle School in Woodbridge, Edgar Middle School stands out as a high-performing institution with significantly higher proficiency rates and overall rankings. While the school's performance is exceptional, there may be opportunities to further enhance student outcomes, particularly in mathematics, where proficiency rates, though still above the state average, are lower than in English Language Arts.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote If you have a problem at the school they are quick to sweep it under the rug - Oh, what would everyone think of their perfect school if they all knew the truth?
The special education team will not help you or your child they will ignore all of his needs and it is because they ignore all the kids in general.
The rich politician or police officer kids run the schools and the teachers pretend to not see anything going on.
The special education staff are fake nice and just give you the run around. You will never get help for your child here unless you have lots of money or know someone who knows someone like the mayor of town. Good luck! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
