Summary:

Elmira High School is a public high school serving grades 10-12 in Elmira, New York, with a total enrollment of 1,249 students. The school is part of the Elmira City School District, which is ranked 822 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Elmira High School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York high schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade, indicating below-average performance compared to other schools in the state. The school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 20% of New York high schools for female students, white students, multi-racial students, special education students, and low socioeconomic status students. In contrast, the school's ranking for African American students is relatively higher, though still in the bottom half of New York high schools. Elmira High School's four-year graduation rate has fluctuated between 78.2% and 85.1% in recent years, which is below the state average, and the school has struggled with high chronic absenteeism, with rates ranging from 34.1% to 45.3% in recent years.

Compared to nearby high schools, such as Horseheads Senior High School, which consistently ranks in the top 20% of New York high schools and outperforms Elmira High School across most academic measures, Elmira High School generally performs worse on key metrics. This may be due in part to the school's high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 63.33% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. Additionally, Elmira High School's per-student spending of $9,489 in the 2022-2023 school year is lower than the state average, which may be a factor in the school's struggles to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to the old EFA. Now as an adult I can reflect that the problem with the school is not the teachers. These folks bust their butts for the kids. The parents of many of these kids failed. They take no accountability in raising their bad kids and blame the school. Stop being your kid's friend and be a parent. Teachers should not have to deal with your kid's crap. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
