Moreland Hills Elementary School

Summary:

Moreland Hills Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Pepper Pike, Ohio, serving 919 students in grades K-5 and part of the highly-ranked Orange City School District.

Moreland Hills Elementary consistently ranks among the top 100 elementary schools in Ohio, with exceptional academic performance across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, 90.3% of 5th-grade students were proficient or better in Science, compared to the state average of 64%. The school's diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 70.73% White, 10.34% African American, 10.34% Asian, and 6.75% two or more races, is a strength, as the school has demonstrated high performance across different racial and ethnic subgroups. However, the school's performance for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, who make up 9.25% of the student population, is an area for improvement.

Moreland Hills Elementary's focus on student engagement is evident in its low chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 5.7% to 13.3%, and a student-teacher ratio of 17.3, both of which are lower than state averages. These factors likely contribute to the school's strong academic outcomes and prepare students for success in an increasingly diverse world. In comparison, nearby schools like Mercer Elementary School and Hilltop Elementary School have lower rankings and performance metrics, making Moreland Hills Elementary an exceptional choice for families in the Pepper Pike area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son has been going to Moreland for his 3d and 4th grades. Based on this 2 year experience, I can say that the school expectations are high, communication with families on a day to day matters is outstanding, resources are plentiful, funding is more than adequate and parents are extremely generous with the donations to support their children's learning. I also can’t say enough good things about the teachers, who are extremely dedicated, caring and truly put their students' needs first, BUT, unfortunately, I cannot say the same about administration. They let my son down more than once. With the COVID year being extremely challenging, first my son was denied an opportunity of in-person learning (this was “served” to me as “the classes reached their full capacity”). I shared with Moreland's principal some personal and sensitive details of how online learning affected the emotional well-being of my child, but, as it turned out, it was not a valid enough reason to let him come back to school in person. What does it take to accommodate an extra desk in a classroom? Move a bookshelf out the way? Then DO it, if you truly stand behind your claim that you hold your students’ best interests in mind. Later on, I asked the principal to let my son participate in outdoor science activities to give him some sense of normalcy. She didn’t bother responding to my email. I truly think if in my email I indicated that I was donating 5,000 dollars to school, it would have been given a higher priority. But when it comes to the needs of a single student, it’s being put on the back burner. While I admit that both of my requests were made on a short notice, I truly think if you get an urgent email from a parent like that, you respond - from your smartphone, outside of school hours, on the weekend - because that’s what principals who truly care about the children in their locus of influence do. Shame on you, Moreland. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
