Monterey High School

Summary:

Monterey High School is a public high school serving grades 7-12 in Monterey, Tennessee, with a student population of 572. The school is part of the Putnam County School District, which is ranked 67 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Monterey High School faces several key challenges. The school has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (around 31%) compared to the state average and nearby schools like The Phoenix School and White County High School. Academically, Monterey High School's performance on TNReady tests is generally below the state and Putnam County averages across subjects and grade levels. The school's statewide ranking has fluctuated significantly, from a high of 130 out of 273 Tennessee high schools in 2016-2017 to a low of 263 out of 358 in 2021-2022.

Monterey High School also faces challenges in supporting vulnerable student populations. The school's performance for special education students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds is relatively low compared to other schools in the state. Additionally, there are disparities in the performance of different student subgroups, with the Hispanic student subgroup tending to perform better than the White student subgroup, which is unusual. These issues suggest that Monterey High School may need to develop targeted strategies to improve educational outcomes for all its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Very unprofessional staff, staff members do not try to cultivate healthy caring relationships with students, staff destroy the self-esteem of student. They use negative reinforcement. Though, there is a large number of Hispanic students, they are extremely under-represented in sports, plays, etc. And extremely over represented in the area of punishment and discipline. Open Quote One of the most important items on our list when looking to relocate was the schools.
Class size and teacher ratios along with resource services where at the top of our concerns. Monterey schools lived up to all our expectations. Our older son needed resource Math and English classes. In his previous school he would miss another subject to go to a resource class and then have to catch up on missed work. It made no sense. Monterey schools offered resource classes at the same time of the mainstream class. He did so much better with the small class size and even took several honors classes. Our younger son also took honor classes and graduated with honors. We now have a niece in the Monterey school system that is doing fabulous and on target to graduate a year early this year. The smaller class sizes really make a big difference in how well the students do. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
