Cook Elementary

Summary:

Cook Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving 446 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Austin Independent School District (AISD), which is ranked 554 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Cook Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools, with significantly lower performance on STAAR tests compared to AISD and Texas state averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, the percentage of Cook Elementary students scoring proficient or better on STAAR Reading ranged from 23.53% to 43.75%, compared to AISD's 55.65%-62.05% and Texas' 48.85%-53.96%. The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (93.95%) may be a significant factor contributing to its lower academic performance. While Cook Elementary spends more per student ($12,005) and has a lower student-teacher ratio (14.3) than nearby schools, these inputs do not appear to be translating into higher academic achievement.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Pillow Elementary, McBee Elementary, and Wooldridge Elementary, also perform below the AISD and Texas averages on STAAR tests, but generally outperform Cook Elementary. Additionally, the Guerrero Thompson school within the same district stands out with significantly higher academic performance, ranking in the top 40% of Texas elementary schools and outperforming Cook Elementary across all subjects and grade levels. The IDEA Public Schools and Harmony Public Schools - Central Texas charter schools in the area also generally outperform Cook Elementary on academic measures.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote If you are a caring/involved parent, avoid Cook Elementary. Every adult entering the school is treated like a criminal. You may not walk your child to class, or even retrieve something left behind without being interrogated by at least 11 harpies along the way. Procedures are unnecessarily militaristic, and largely inefficient at that.
Tax dollars at waste here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
