Homer Dr Elementary

Summary:

Homer Dr Elementary is a public elementary school in Beaumont, Texas, serving 399 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Beaumont Independent School District, which is ranked 869 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Homer Dr Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Texas. The school's performance on STAAR tests is significantly below state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with proficiency rates often less than half the state averages. This is particularly true for the school's African American, Hispanic, and economically disadvantaged students, who consistently rank in the bottom 10-20% of their respective categories statewide. Despite a relatively high per-student spending level, ranging from $8,211 to $10,454 per student, and a lower student-teacher ratio than nearby schools, the academic outcomes do not reflect a commensurate level of performance.

When comparing Homer Dr Elementary to other schools in the Beaumont ISD, it becomes clear that the school is an outlier in terms of academic performance. Nearby schools like Caldwood Elementary, Amelia Elementary, and Curtis Elementary all outperform Homer Dr Elementary on STAAR tests, with significantly higher proficiency rates across the board. Additionally, the local Bob Hope School and Texas College Preparatory Academies charter schools, while still underperforming the state averages in some areas, generally outperform Homer Dr Elementary, suggesting that alternative educational models may be more effective in addressing the needs of the student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have volunteered at this school, and although what I saw was just a small portion of it, in talking with a few of the teachers I learned that some kids just have crappy parents who don't put any time or effort into them. If they are not getting good basics at home, they are probably not going to thrive at school, or in the real world. The librarians, office staff, other teachers I saw in the hall seemed very caring and the children seemed well behaved. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
