Hobby Elementary

Summary:

Hobby Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving 504 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Houston Independent School District (HISD), which is ranked 572 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hobby Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools over the past six years. The school's performance on STAAR tests is significantly below state and district averages across all grade levels and subjects, particularly for African American and Hispanic student subgroups. With 88.69% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, Hobby Elementary serves a high-needs population, which may contribute to its underperformance. Despite increased per-student spending, the school's student-teacher ratio remains relatively high, potentially limiting the individual attention and support available to students.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Almeda Elementary, Reagan K-8 Educational Center, and Hines-Caldwell, Hobby Elementary performs significantly worse on academic measures. Additionally, two nearby magnet schools, Windsor Village Elementary and Red Elementary, have much higher proficiency rates and better statewide rankings, suggesting the potential impact of specialized programs and resources on student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Do not send your child to this school it is terrible, their customer service is one of the worst I have ever experienced. The front office administrators are rude, the principle doesn't care what goes on, and the teachers are young and unprofessional. The teachers never know what is going on in their classroom, if something happens a fight or something serious they don't know what happened either not enough training to deal with children or to many kids in the classroom. I have had a teacher argue with me because I knew the policy of the school and she wanted me to do something else outside of policy and I refused. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
