D.G. Cooley Elementary

Summary:

D.G. Cooley Elementary is a public elementary school in Berryville, Virginia, serving 463 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Clarke County Public Schools district.

D.G. Cooley Elementary has a predominantly white student population, with 70.19% of students identifying as white. The school's academic performance is mixed, with strong performance in 5th grade English Reading but struggles in 4th grade Mathematics. The school has a relatively low percentage of economically disadvantaged students at 31.1%, lower than some nearby schools like Frederick Douglass Elementary and Garland R. Quarles Elementary. However, the school's statewide ranking has declined in recent years, and there are significant disparities in performance among different student subgroups.

When compared to nearby schools, D.G. Cooley Elementary generally performs on par or slightly better in terms of academic achievement, with some exceptions. For instance, Boyce Elementary outperforms D.G. Cooley in 4th grade Mathematics and 4th grade VA Studies, while D.G. Cooley performs better in 5th grade English Reading. These differences, along with the higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students at some nearby schools, suggest that the district and school may need to address equity concerns and work to improve overall academic outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My granddaughter goes to Cooly and she loves it. Happy to get out of the car everyday. Her teachers are real nice. Small school so she's greeted by name everyday by the teachers that get her out of the car. They know me too. Nice folks. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
