Prince Edward Middle

Summary:

Prince Edward Middle is a public middle school in Farmville, Virginia, serving 544 students in grades 5-8. The school is part of the Prince Edward County Public Schools district, which is ranked 120 out of 130 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Prince Edward Middle faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom quartile of Virginia middle schools with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's performance on state assessments (SOL tests) is significantly below the state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. This is particularly concerning given that over 97% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. Additionally, the school's per-student spending of around $6,000-$7,400 is lower than the nearby Buckingham County Middle, Central Middle, and Cumberland Middle schools.

Compared to the nearby schools, Prince Edward Middle has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (55.88%), and the performance of these students, as well as those from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, is even lower than the overall school ranking. This suggests that the school is facing significant achievement gaps that need to be addressed. The declining performance of Prince Edward Middle over the past several years, coupled with the relative underperformance compared to its peers, indicates that factors such as resource availability, teacher quality, and student support services may be contributing to the academic challenges faced by the school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Contrary to what the other parent said, my child has received a good education with the Prince Edward County Middle School. Take into thought, however, that she has been going to Prince Edward since pre-k. I believe that teachers and administrators do really care for students, and not just a paycheck. Close Quote

Open Quote First of all, if the school had a rating with a zero, then that would be my rating. Prince Edward County Middle School has a lot of bullying problems. The faculty Asst. Principal and Head Principal are not taking bullying seriously. Bullies get slapped on the wrist while the innocent one's get punished. As for as my experience for the last 4 years that my daughter has been there has been a headache. She goes to complain about being called names and had to end leading to her fighting. She fought because she was being bullied and the other student swung first. But when I ask them to investigate a situation about my daughter before something happens, they shove the paperwork down to the Guidance Council which should have been handled by the Principal's in charge. I've been through the court system, school board, resource officer on duty at the school, the probation officer, you name it. They are so ready to put our kids out of school when they get into trouble but won't contact you back when you send your child to them for a problem that's bothering them before it gets aggressive. The Resource Officer is a understanding officer and when I ask him to check into something concerning my daughter (bullied, name calling, B's & H's etc.) He does it and does it better than the principals. He diffuses the situation before it starts. At this school, all staff should pull TOGETHER AS ONE, because as a matter of fact, once our child/children boards that school bus they become school property until they are returned back home safely. But there is a lot of time in between home and school and school to home for someone to be bullied in some way, fashion or form. I'm tired of fighting with them. I've followed all of the chain of commands and by the School Handbook from the first day of school. The punishments that are listed for whatever a student does, it's incorrect. Some students get put out and some get a warning. Is there a problem there of who is related to who? That's why some students don't get punished for their actions. A GOOD APPLE goes rotten if it isn't eaten in a certain length of time, then so can a GOOD STUDENT go bad. I don't proclaim that my daughter is the perfect child, but a lot of the reasons why she got into trouble is because she went to the office to tell them what's going on and they don't pay her no mind. So, she feels like if nobody is willing to listen to her concerns, believe her, and try to come to a conclusion, then she is going to defend herself. It just seems like someone is washing another persons back and throw our parent concerns in old File 13. I don't recommend Prince Edward Middle School for an incoming student, I think a dog gets treated better than our children. Try other schools in the area which may have a greater rating than Prince Edward County Middle School. The middle school needs to shape up drastically, and the School Board should start handing out pink slips because those who suppose to be in authority there are only there for the paycheck and not our children. Please think twice before sending your precious ones there because they won't be precious long by the time the bullies get to them. Straight Fact. I am a very concerned parent who child is in the 8th grade and has been bullied since when she first started 5th grade there and it's STILL GOING ON after over 3 1/2 years of pure hell!! God Bless each child and parent who experience what I have been through. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
