Fulks Run Elementary

Summary:

Fulks Run Elementary is a public elementary school in Fulks Run, Virginia, serving 138 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Rockingham County Public Schools district, which is ranked 90 out of 130 districts in the state.

Despite being ranked in the bottom quarter of Virginia elementary schools, Fulks Run Elementary stands out in several key areas. The school outperforms the district and state averages in 3rd grade mathematics and 5th grade science, with an impressive 93.75% and 64.29% proficiency rates, respectively. This strong academic performance may be attributed to the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio of 11.7 and significantly higher spending per student ($12,991) compared to the district and state. However, the school faces challenges related to its high poverty rate, with 85.51% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, and its overwhelmingly white student population (94.2%), which performs poorly compared to other Virginia elementary schools.

When compared to nearby schools, Fulks Run Elementary outperforms Mountain View Elementary and Lacey Spring Elementary, both part of the Rockingham County Public Schools district. However, it lags behind the higher-performing Linville-Edom Elementary and John C. Myers Elementary schools. These comparisons suggest that Fulks Run Elementary has room for improvement, particularly in addressing the achievement gaps among its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote FRES should be a model for other elementary schools. It is small enough to provide individualized instruction, care, and help as needed to it's student body, and it does so admirably. The teachers and staff are, for the most part, highly caring and competent. The school sponsors and/or conducts numerous programs and events designed to involve the students and their families.

The people of this area are quite fortunate to have a facility of this caliber with which to entrust our children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
