Verbena High School

Summary:

Verbena High School is an alternative public school serving grades PK-12 in Verbena, Alabama, with a student population of 592 that is predominantly White. The school consistently underperforms academically compared to the Chilton County and Alabama state averages, with only 8.82% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in Mathematics, far below the county and state levels.

Verbena High School faces significant challenges, including a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 63.24% to 81.93%, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. Despite this, the school's spending per student was $9,584 in 2018-2019, higher than the nearby Thorsby High School ($9,035) and Isabella High School ($8,326), raising questions about the effective allocation of resources.

Compared to other schools in the Chilton County district, Verbena High School consistently underperforms, suggesting that the challenges faced by the school may be unique or more pronounced within the district. The school's low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 17.2 to 18.6, indicates smaller class sizes and potentially more individualized attention, but this has not translated into improved academic outcomes for the students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I believe that Verbena High School is a great school. It is small so the students get to know everyone and the faculty takes a personal interest in each child. The principal, Mrs. Robin Cagle, is working to improve the Verbena High School facilities and campus. She is an alumnus of the school so she cares about the reputation of the school and strives to make it better. The faculty are all highly qualified and want to see that each student is successful and receives the individual attention he or she needs. Verbena's graduates do well in college and in their chosen careers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
