James Dawson Elementary

Summary:

James Dawson Elementary is a public elementary school in Huntsville, Alabama, serving 432 students in grades PK-6 as part of the Huntsville City School District. The school faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance, a high percentage of African American students, and an extremely high rate of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

James Dawson Elementary has ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Alabama elementary schools for the past 10 years, with a 0-1 star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates in mathematics and English language arts are significantly lower than the Huntsville City and Alabama state averages across all grade levels. This low performance is coupled with a student population that is 73.61% African American, a much higher percentage than the surrounding schools in the district. Additionally, over 88% of James Dawson Elementary students receive free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While the nearby schools in the Huntsville City School District also face challenges, they generally perform better than James Dawson Elementary. Schools like Academy for Science and Foreign Language and Highlands Elementary have higher proficiency rates, lower free/reduced lunch rates, and better overall rankings compared to James Dawson. This suggests that the factors contributing to the low performance at James Dawson Elementary, such as racial and economic disparities, may be more pronounced at this particular school within the district, and addressing these underlying issues could be crucial in improving educational outcomes for the students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Huntsville city schools are throwing to much at these kid's at such young ages and not enough free time all because they was failing at one point. My child is getting burnt out. Close Quote

Open Quote I am a substitute teacher and have worked in several different schools in Huntsville. I have worked both in the inner city schools as well as the suburbs. In every school I have been in I have been able to find something good. This school is a mess. The teachers do not discipline at all (I am sure that there are some exceptions) leading the children to act like a pack of wild dogs. The kids fight (even girl against boy) constantly. The kids know that they will get away with anything and are full of hatred for the world, I really feel sorry for any child that had to go to this school. The principle walks around like he is a runway model and dose little or nothing. If you live in this area do everything you can to keep your kids out of this school. The place is like a prison. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
