Summary:

Valley Vista High School is a public high school located in Surprise, Arizona, serving grades 7-12 with a total enrollment of 2,464 students. The school is part of the Dysart Unified District, which is ranked 135 out of 288 districts in Arizona and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Valley Vista High School has a diverse student population, with 34.17% White, 9.05% African American, 48.09% Hispanic, 1.3% Asian, 0.93% Native American, 0.32% Pacific Islander, and 6.13% two or more races. Academically, the school's performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 40% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 47% for the district and 38% for the state. Similarly, in mathematics, only 33% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better, compared to 37% for the district and 30% for the state. However, the school has maintained a relatively high four-year graduation rate, ranging from 92.3% to 95.4% over the past few years, though its dropout rate has also increased, from 0.6% in 2019-2020 to 2.3% in 2022-2023.

When compared to the nearby Willow Canyon High School, which is also part of the Dysart Unified District, Valley Vista High School generally performs worse academically, with lower test scores and a lower statewide ranking. Additionally, the Dysart iSchool, a virtual high school within the Dysart Unified District, has a higher academic performance than Valley Vista High School, with 57% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 44% at Valley Vista High School. These findings suggest that Valley Vista High School faces some challenges in terms of academic performance, particularly in comparison to nearby schools and the district and state averages.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

This year has been a great start with both the students and staff with school spirit!! It would be nice to see more parent involvement Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
