Royal Palm Middle School

Summary:

Royal Palm Middle School is a public middle school in Phoenix, Arizona, serving 536 students in grades 5-8 and part of the Washington Elementary School District, which is ranked 225 out of 288 districts in the state.

Academically, Royal Palm Middle School faces some challenges. Its proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics are generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's ELA proficiency rates for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades were 36%, 32%, and 28%, respectively, compared to the district's 34%, 31%, and 29%, and the state's 43%, 41%, and 35%. The school has also experienced higher dropout rates in recent years, ranging from 0.0% to 3.0%, compared to the surrounding schools, which have dropout rates ranging from 2.4% to 11.0%. Additionally, Royal Palm Middle School has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 92.72% to 92.91% in recent years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

It's important to note that the challenges faced by Royal Palm Middle School are not unique to this school. Many of the nearby schools, such as Cholla Middle School, Palo Verde Middle School, and several Alhambra Elementary District schools, also struggle with low academic performance and high rates of economic disadvantage. Addressing these issues will likely require a comprehensive, district-wide approach to improving educational outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is the worst school district I’ve ever experienced. The steering from the principal down to the teachers. They are more interested in what the kids wear than their education. No matter how much you complain and beg the teachers to communicate they refuse. I took both my children out of this school immediately. The bullying the students receive from the faculty staff is unbelievable. My advice if you can take your babies somewhere else PLEASE DO. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
