Compass Charter Schools of Los Angeles

Summary:

Compass Charter Schools of Los Angeles is an alternative public charter virtual school serving grades K-12 in Thousand Oaks, CA, with 888 students. The school outperforms the state average in several key test score metrics, particularly in the early elementary grades, but faces some challenges in maintaining student achievement as they progress through the upper grades.

Compass Charter Schools of Los Angeles shows strong academic performance in the early grades, outpacing the state average in both ELA and Math proficiency for 3rd-5th graders. However, the school's test scores decline in the upper grades, with 11th grade Math proficiency at only 25.45% compared to the state average of 27.9%. Compared to other virtual charter schools in the area, such as Insight @ San Diego and the California Virtual Academy @ Los Angeles, Compass Charter Schools of Los Angeles generally performs better on test scores, graduation rates, and chronic absenteeism.

The school's high percentage of free/reduced lunch recipients, at 54.39%, indicates it serves a more economically disadvantaged population, which may contribute to some of the academic challenges the school faces, particularly in the upper grades. Overall, Compass Charter Schools of Los Angeles appears to be a relatively strong-performing virtual charter school, especially in the early grades and in comparison to other virtual schools in the region, but it faces some challenges in maintaining student achievement as they progress through the school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am extremely shocked with the lack of support from this program and how coordinators have no experience as educators. The school made a big mess paying for my children's course, had them enrolled in the WRONG GRADE LEVEL. My seven-year-old was in 4th grade and nine-year-old was in 1st grade. After months of complaining I was told my youngest would only be able to attend 3 classes. That doesn't even cover core curriculum. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
