Stine Elementary

Summary:

Stine Elementary is a public elementary school in Bakersfield, California, serving 607 students in grades K-6. It is part of the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District, which is ranked 790 out of 1,568 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Stine Elementary faces significant challenges, with a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism rates, from 12.3% in 2017-2018 to 47.4% in 2021-2022. Academically, the school consistently performs below the district and state averages in Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 25.53% of Stine Elementary students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 46.16% for the district and 47.04% for the state. In Mathematics, only 13.29% of Stine Elementary students were proficient or better, compared to 30.2% for the district and 35.54% for the state. The school's student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students, also consistently perform below their peers at the district and state levels.

Stine Elementary's struggles may be partly attributed to its high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 93.74% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023. When compared to nearby schools within the same district, such as Wayne Van Horn Elementary and Laurelglen Elementary, Stine consistently underperforms in academic metrics. However, the performance gap is less pronounced when compared to schools in the neighboring Bakersfield City School District, suggesting that the challenges faced by Stine Elementary may be more systemic to the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Stine is a great School. The teachers are very nice and very knowledgeable. The office staff are very nice people. I have never had a problem with any of them. Just want to Thank Mrs. Loomis, Ms. Reed and Mrs. Wilkerson for really caring about there students. Thank you for the great job you are all doing for our children. Close Quote

Open Quote The Teachers are great ,but they are under staffed. I guess the overcrowding is not only a problem in prisons now it's a problem in our schools. Under staffed school can have serious problems, Yard aids are limited only one for almost 100 students. The one aid could only do so much. If Stine Elementary had more staff the school would be perect. I do feel bad for the teachers that work in an overcrowded environment. There are some parents that care and there are other parents who dont care and let their children do what they want. The Excellent 5 stars go for the great Teachers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
