Teague Elementary

Summary:

Teague Elementary is a public elementary school in Fresno, California, serving 608 students in grades K-6. The school faces significant challenges, with high chronic absenteeism rates, consistently low academic performance, and a predominantly low-income student population.

Teague Elementary has seen a sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 15.9% in 2017-2018 to 39.8% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the Central Unified district and state averages. Academically, the school consistently performs below the district and state in Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics, with only 32.49% of students proficient or better in ELA and 22.19% in Math, compared to 41.78% and 28.68% in the district, respectively. Teague's student subgroups, such as African American and Hispanic students, as well as English Language Learners and Special Education students, also perform below their peers at the district and state levels.

When compared to nearby schools within the Central Unified district, Teague Elementary generally performs worse academically and has higher chronic absenteeism rates. However, some nearby schools, such as Herndon-Barstow Elementary and River Bluff Elementary, outperform Teague in both academic achievement and attendance. The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Teague, reaching 92.27% in 2022-2023, suggests that the school serves a predominantly low-income community, which may contribute to the challenges it faces.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I wouldnt have my kids going to any other school! Teague is a wonderful school that has great teachers, programs, activities, and most importantly students. We are not just an elementary school but a family that supports one another. We might be one of the oldest schools in our district but to me that just goes to say that if its been around this long then Teague is doing something right! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
