Westlake High

Summary:

Westlake High is a public high school located in Westlake Village, California, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 2,083 students. It is part of the Conejo Valley Unified School District, which is ranked 292 out of 1,568 districts in California and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. Westlake High has a strong academic reputation, consistently ranking among the top high schools in the state over the past decade, with a current statewide ranking of 301 out of 2,323 California high schools and a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Westlake High consistently outperforms the state and district averages in standardized test scores, with a higher percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. The school also has an impressive four-year graduation rate of 98.7% and a low dropout rate of just 1.1%. Westlake High's performance is particularly strong among certain student subgroups, such as Asian and multi-racial students, who rank among the top in the state. However, the school faces some challenges with its English Language Learner and Special Education students, who have significantly lower proficiency rates and rankings compared to the overall student population.

While Westlake High's performance is generally stronger than its nearby counterparts, Newbury Park High and Thousand Oaks High, which are also part of the Conejo Valley Unified School District, the school could potentially focus on improving its chronic absenteeism rate and addressing the performance gaps among its English Language Learner and Special Education students. Overall, Westlake High is a high-performing school that consistently ranks among the top in the state, providing a quality education to its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Unfortunately, WHS has an undeserved good reputation. Try to ask about the criteria for its high rankings. You won't get a specific answer and a lot of attitude that you dared to ask. The environment both academic & social is rife with classism, the school has an offensive and racist mascot, and has a de facto two-tiered extra curricular environment; if you can't afford to pay, you don't get to participate (and they are in deep denial about it—the less income you have the more pressure put on you to quit). Booster clubs are notorious for acting like creditors demanding payment and treating lesser income families like criminals and cheats. Teachers are nearly inaccessible to students and parents, use of 21st technologies are discouraged and restricted, and information from teachers and the administration in general comes at a substantial cost in time and energy investment for very little return. A lot of elitist attitudes, snobbery and bullying among students. Incredible peer pressure and social stigmatization within the student body and seriously dysfunctional administrative and parent denial. Their academic system does not prepare a lower class student for college systems, while supporting and rewarding upper class privilege. If you are upper class and look like it, you'll have a great experience. If you're a square peg or lower income, this round-hole school is a nightmare. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
