Bryant Elementary

Summary:

Bryant Elementary is a public elementary school in Long Beach, California, serving 324 students in grades K-5. It is part of the Long Beach Unified school district, which is ranked 654 out of 1,568 districts in the state.

Bryant Elementary faces several challenges, including lower-than-average test scores in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science, as well as a significant increase in chronic absenteeism rates, rising from 13.2% in 2017-2018 to 37.5% in 2022-2023. The school's performance has been inconsistent, with its ranking and star rating fluctuating between 2 and 3 stars. Interestingly, the school's African American and Hispanic students perform relatively well, ranking in the top quartile of California elementary schools in these subgroups, but the school's special education and disabled student populations perform significantly worse, ranking in the bottom quartile.

Compared to nearby schools like Lowell Elementary and Gant Elementary, Bryant Elementary significantly underperforms in terms of test scores, chronic absenteeism, and overall school rankings. These nearby schools have lower percentages of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, which may contribute to their stronger academic performance. Addressing the root causes of Bryant Elementary's high chronic absenteeism and the disparities in student subgroup performance should be a priority for the school and district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son was transferred from Mann to Bryant...and that was the best decision for him...my son had a severe speech impediment that his kindergarten teacher immediately recognized and set him up with the schools speech therapist, he in now in 4th grade and has completely overcome his speech impediment. There are great teachers at Bryant and their coaches and monitors are the absolute best, they are firm but caring and it shows in the behavior of the children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
