Beattie Middle

Summary:

Beattie Middle is a public middle school located in Highland, California, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,097 students. It is part of the Redlands Unified School District, which is ranked 540 out of 1,568 districts in California and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Beattie Middle's performance on standardized tests is generally on par with or slightly below the Redlands Unified School District and the state of California averages. However, the school stands out in its strong performance for certain student subgroups, such as African American students, who rank 179th out of 626 California middle schools in 2023-2024 with a 4-star rating, and homeless students, who rank 27th out of 394 California middle schools in 2023-2024 with a 5-star rating. Conversely, the school's performance for other subgroups, such as Asian, multi-racial, and English Language Learner students, is relatively lower compared to the state and district averages.

One area of concern at Beattie Middle is the significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 4.4% in 2018-2019 to 19.0% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the nearby Moore Middle (28.9%) and Cope Middle (26.4%). Additionally, Beattie Middle has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 69.55% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the nearby Redlands Unified schools. This suggests the school serves a predominantly low-income community, which may contribute to the school's overall academic performance and the need for additional resources and support to address the unique challenges faced by this student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We have had two children attend this school...Unfortunately, our experiences have been very very poor. With two seperate principals we have asked for extra help for our students with very negative results... Teachers have not done what they have agreed to do to help our children accurately record their assignments nor have the ensured that they were completed. The principal has lied and caused our child to cry and loose sleep by telling him that he should be in special education. The district "supervisors" have failed to hold any teacher or pricipal accountable for doing their jobs and routinely back their teachers fully, no matter what they do or how they do it. We have many many friends who experience the same non-caring teachers and administrators at this school. We have just now begun informing the board of education and will contact our attorneys and media outlets if necessary, though we hope it will not be necessary. The school board will have to provide some executive insight into this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
