Ybarra Academy for the Arts and Technology

Summary:

Ybarra Academy for the Arts and Technology is a public elementary school serving 596 students in grades K-8 in Walnut, CA, which is part of the Rowland Unified School District. This high-performing school consistently outperforms the district and the state of California in standardized test scores, with 60.58% of students proficient or better in ELA/Literacy and 43.09% proficient in math, compared to 47.81% and 35.39% for the district, respectively.

Ybarra Academy excels for certain student subgroups, such as English Language Learners and Hispanic students, who rank in the top 5.7% and top 24.4% of California elementary schools in ELA/Literacy, respectively. However, the school struggles with its Asian student population, ranking in the bottom 27-33% of the state. Additionally, while Ybarra's chronic absenteeism rates are lower than the district's, they have been increasing in recent years, from 6.5% in 2017-2018 to 16.2% in 2022-2023, which is an area of concern.

Compared to nearby schools in the Rowland Unified District, such as Jellick Elementary, Rorimer Elementary, and Hollingworth Elementary, Ybarra Academy outperforms them in both ELA and math proficiency. However, it lags behind the high-performing schools in the neighboring Walnut Valley Unified District, such as Vejar Elementary, Walnut Elementary, and Cyrus J. Morris Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Having recently leaving this school into high school I feel like should give my two cents. In all honesty this school isn't the greatest like everyone says it is. Yes some of the teachers are good, but I feel it ill-prepared for high school. Granted I'm not going to Rowland, but I feel this school should have prepared me in some way. The first week of high school was very difficult for me. So in conclusion, if you want to your child at Ybarra no ones stopping you, but I suggest you move them to Suzzanne for junior high. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
