San Francisco Public Montessori

Summary:

San Francisco Public Montessori is a small, public elementary school serving grades K-5 in the San Francisco Unified School District. With 118 students, the school has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger and generally performs above the state average in English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency, but lags behind the district average.

One key differentiator for San Francisco Public Montessori is its relatively low student-teacher ratio of 16.8, compared to 19.1 at the nearby Sherman Elementary and 20.8 at Parks (Rosa) Elementary. However, the school has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 12.8% in 2018-2019 to 36.8% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the district average. Additionally, the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch has increased from 36.36% in 2020-2021 to 49.15% in 2022-2023, indicating a growing population of economically disadvantaged students.

As a public Montessori school, San Francisco Public Montessori likely employs a unique educational approach that emphasizes hands-on, self-directed learning. While the school's performance may be on par or slightly below average compared to nearby elementary schools, its small size and low student-teacher ratio could be leveraged to improve student outcomes if the school and district can effectively address the rising chronic absenteeism and support the growing population of economically disadvantaged students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have a child here at K. Despites the all transitions had in the past,we have all been very happy there - the school is a special place, a warm, caring place where I have always felt safe leaving my child. SHe has been happy with every single teachers that she have had, so far. The environment is inspired to learn and enjoyed pretty much everything about SFPM. Many of the parents are closely linked with their children and the school and that makes for a fabulous community feeling that translates into a high quality education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
