Weed Elementary

Summary:

Weed Elementary is a public elementary school serving 323 students in grades K-8 in the small town of Weed, California, which is part of the Weed Union Elementary School District. However, the school faces significant challenges, including consistently low academic performance, high chronic absenteeism, and a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

Weed Elementary's academic performance is consistently below the state average in both English Language Arts and Mathematics, with proficiency rates ranging from just 7.69% to 30.77% across grade levels, compared to the state averages of 42.8% to 47.37% in ELA and 31.57% to 45.64% in Math. The school's chronic absenteeism rates have also been high, ranging from 8.4% to 31.5% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average. Additionally, 78.02% of Weed Elementary's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, compared to the state average of around 60%, indicating a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

Interestingly, Weed Elementary's performance is significantly lower than that of nearby schools, such as Butteville Elementary, which is only 3.33 miles away and consistently outperforms Weed Elementary and the state averages in ELA, Math, and Science. Weed Elementary's performance is particularly low for its White and Low Socioeconomic Status student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 10% of California elementary schools for these groups. Despite these challenges, Weed Elementary's performance has remained stagnant over the past several years, with the school consistently ranking in the bottom 10-15% of California elementary schools and maintaining a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

The staff! You would really think that this 8 year old boy ran this school, He is 8 all of you are licensed professionals! I really just want to know how he got his shoes off and layed down on the floor with his teacher watching. My son is no angel granted, but when the school invests thousands of dollars on yet another curriculum program for basic math, the same basic math they've been teaching for years, generations, instead of investing it into training their staff!!! Your teachers obviously need new techniques, not another program that teaches the same mathematics that people have been learning for ever! Its not the curriculum its how your staff delivers it. Lets face it, this school is a joke, and the only reason my son goes there is because it is the least of three evils for jokes of educational facilities in this county! No wonder over 63% of our kids don't feel confident enough to face the world and never leave Siskiyou County. My advice, If you' The staff! The principal and teachers here have absolutely no common sense, lets suspend a student for 3 days on Monday, but then not count Monday, the problem is obvious even the "leader" doesn't know how to do basic math, no wonder they wasted my hard earned money it. And then when he does go back on a Thursday go ahead and crush his spirit again b/c you can't count. Yeah that sends a message alright, you don't want him there. Well guess what If I had a choice he wouldn't be. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
