South Park High School

Summary:

South Park High School is a public high school located in Fairplay, Colorado, serving 124 students in grades 9-12. The school has a predominantly White student population, with smaller percentages of Hispanic, African American, Asian, and multiracial students.

One of the key strengths of South Park High School is its relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.7 to 16.5 over the past three years, which is lower than the nearby Cloud City High School at 14.0. Additionally, the school has a lower percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 27.42% to 31.45%, compared to the 62.86% at Cloud City High School. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by PSAT and CMAS test scores, is mixed, with 9th-grade PSAT Math scores significantly lower than the state average.

Over the past decade, South Park High School's statewide ranking has steadily declined, from a high of 9th out of 255 Colorado high schools in 2015-2016 to 237th out of 349 in 2022-2023. The school's racial composition has also shifted slightly, with a decrease in the percentage of White students and an increase in the percentage of Hispanic students. Compared to the nearby Lake County High School, South Park High School serves a more racially homogeneous student population, with a significantly lower percentage of Hispanic students and a higher percentage of White students. These findings suggest that while South Park High School has some positive attributes, it may also face challenges in maintaining its academic performance and addressing the changing demographics of the local community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The middle and high school are a joke. There is a reason why this school ranks as low as it does. Teachers have an attitude of, I don't care, I'm here for a paycheck. The children are left to their on disposal. If they don't want to do the school work during the day they don't have to. Not one adult that I have seen there takes accountability. It is the kids fault. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
