Summary:

Chatfield Elementary School is a public elementary school in Grand Junction, Colorado, serving 401 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Mesa County Valley School District No. 51, which is ranked 52 out of 116 school districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Chatfield Elementary has a higher percentage of White students (65.34%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 52.72% to 84.33% White students. The school also has a higher percentage of Hispanic students (30.17%) compared to the district average. Academically, Chatfield's performance on CMAS tests is generally lower than the district and state averages across all grades and subjects, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (43.2%) and Math (38.6%) falling below the district (41.1% and 31.8%) and state (44.1% and 34.2%) averages. However, the school has performed well in serving its low-socioeconomic status (SES) students, ranking 28 out of 265 Colorado elementary schools for low-SES student performance in 2022-2023.

Chatfield Elementary is located in close proximity to several other elementary schools in the district, such as Lincoln Orchard Mesa Elementary and Independence Academy, which have higher overall academic performance and rankings compared to Chatfield. The school has also seen a slight decline in its student population and a decrease in the percentage of non-White students over the past three school years, which may be worth further investigation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
