East Haven High School

Summary:

East Haven High School is a public high school serving 849 students in grades 9-12 in East Haven, Connecticut, which is part of the East Haven School District. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is more varied than some nearby schools like North Branford High School and Hamden High School.

Academically, East Haven High School's performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally lower than the state average and some neighboring schools. Only 39.5% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in SAT/English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 54.8%, and just 13% were proficient or better in SAT/Math, compared to the state average of 29.5%. The school's performance also varies across different student subgroups, with Hispanic students performing better than special education and female students.

East Haven High School serves a relatively low-income population, with 30-49% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which is higher than some nearby schools. Additionally, the school's racial diversity has declined in recent years, with the percentage of White students increasing and the percentage of Hispanic students decreasing. While East Haven High School faces several challenges, addressing these issues may require a comprehensive approach, including targeted interventions, resource allocation, and collaboration with the broader community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Educationally, this school is not apples-to-apples with others such as Branford or North Branford. East Haven's honors classes are more like regular level classes in those schools. Socially, it's a larger scale school so that is a positive, but the kids are rough (especially if you're not used to the East Haven environment). Although almost all schools, including E.H.H.S., they claim to be "non-tolerant" to bullying, I've seen cases otherwise. There are fights and such, as any high school has, but possibly more frequently than the norm. East Haven clearly doesn't have "great" school systems, educationally or socially, but they aren't the absolute worst either. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
