North Windham School

Summary:

North Windham School is an elementary school serving 421 students in grades K-5 in the Windham School District in Connecticut. The school has a predominantly Hispanic student population (75.06%) and a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with over 75% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

North Windham School consistently underperforms the state and district averages in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, only 23.9% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 45.9% statewide. The school's math proficiency rates ranged from 25.4% to 31%, well below the state averages. This underperformance is not unique to North Windham School, as the nearby W.B. Sweeney School, Windham Center School, and Natchaug School also struggle with low test scores and similar demographic profiles.

However, the Charles H. Barrows STEM Academy, a public magnet school in the Windham School District, significantly outperforms North Windham School and the district as a whole in both ELA and math proficiency rates. This suggests that specialized educational programs and resources can have a positive impact on student achievement. Additionally, the high student-teacher ratio of 11.3 at North Windham School may be a contributing factor to its underperformance, as smaller class sizes have been shown to benefit student learning.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child first year at this school and its very unorganized no lunch menus no schedules I drop off and pick up and the staff was telling me to wait here then some were else . The teacher is very nice and the assistant but it didn't seem like the teacher knew who her assistant was. No teachers in the classrooms in the morning waiting by the bus they should have the teachers assist helping the children off the bus. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
