Ketcham Elementary School

Summary:

Ketcham Elementary School is a public elementary school in Washington, DC, serving 284 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) district, which is ranked 27th out of 47 districts in DC and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Ketcham Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently underperforming the DCPS and District of Columbia averages in both Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in 2022-2023, only 5.26% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 37.37% for DCPS and 30.64% for the District of Columbia. The school's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 50th out of 99 DC elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 89th out of 128 in 2022-2023, with a consistent 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Interestingly, Ketcham has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 10.5, and its spending per student has steadily increased, reaching $25,540 in 2021-2022.

The nearby schools, such as Savoy Elementary, Moten Elementary, and Lawrence E. Boone Elementary, have similar demographic profiles and academic performance challenges as Ketcham Elementary. In contrast, the nearby charter schools, such as Lee Montessori PCS - East End and KIPP DC schools, generally outperform Ketcham Elementary and the other nearby DCPS schools in academic metrics, suggesting that the charter school model may be more effective in addressing the educational needs of the local community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The do not have accommodations for people with disabilities. The elevators in the school are for staff use only. So if you are a disabled parent and your child's class is upstairs you will need to find someone else to take them. Also school has been in session for 6 weeks and they still have not figured out before care for working parents. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
