Center City PCS - Trinidad

Summary:

Center City PCS - Trinidad is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Washington, DC, with a student population of 189 that is predominantly African American. Despite having relatively high per-student spending and a low student-teacher ratio, the school has consistently underperformed academically compared to both district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas.

The school's academic performance has been a significant concern, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics falling well below the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 3rd grade ELA proficiency was just 4.6%, compared to the district average of 28.2%, and its 3rd grade Math proficiency was 13.6%, compared to the district average of 29.9%. This pattern of underperformance is evident across all grade levels and student subgroups, including female, male, African American, and at-risk students.

Interestingly, nearby schools such as Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School and Capitol Hill Montessori School at Logan demonstrate significantly higher academic performance, even though they serve more diverse student populations. This suggests that the challenges faced by Center City PCS - Trinidad may not be solely attributable to the demographics of its student body, but rather to factors within the school's operations and instructional practices. Additionally, the school's relatively high per-student spending and low student-teacher ratio raise questions about the effectiveness of its resource allocation and the alignment between spending and academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has been the worst experience ever and it’s so sad they are very unprofessional even the principal assistant. She screams and yell at the students and always telling the teachers business to students VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. Also I felt uncomfortable there every time I entered the building it was a negative vibe. And the turn over rate is horrible every other week there’s a new teacher or a sub so crazy it’s no GROWTH at that place at all. I would never send my child there ever. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
