Middle Schools in Sumter

The Sumter area has only one middle school, South Sumter Middle School, which serves students in grades 6-8. Despite being the sole middle school in the district, South Sumter Middle School stands out for its consistently strong academic performance, outpacing both the Sumter district and the state of Florida in various standardized test scores.

South Sumter Middle School boasts impressive proficiency rates, with 82% of students passing the Algebra 1 EOC, 93% passing the Geometry EOC, and 77% passing the Civics EOC in the 2023-2024 school year. The school also excels in 8th grade science, with a 63% proficiency rate, compared to 58% for the district and 45% for the state. In English Language Arts and math, the school's proficiency rates range from 54% to 62% and 57% to 70%, respectively, across 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, consistently outperforming the district and state averages.

While the school serves a predominantly White student population (66%), it also has a significant percentage of Hispanic (17.73%) and African American (9.48%) students. Additionally, the school has a relatively high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 60.76% of the student body eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
