Inverness Primary School

Summary:

Inverness Primary School is a public elementary school serving 683 students in grades PK-5 in Inverness, Florida, which is part of the Citrus School District. The school faces several challenges, including high chronic absenteeism, lower-than-average test scores, and a high proportion of economically disadvantaged students.

Inverness Primary School's chronic absenteeism rate has risen significantly, from 12.5% in 2019-2020 to 35.0% in 2021-2022, which is notably higher than the district and state averages. The school's test scores are generally below the district and state averages across grade levels and subject areas, with 5th-grade science proficiency at 47% compared to 49% for the district and 53% for the state. Additionally, Inverness Primary School has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 64.71% to 73.74% over the past three years, which is significantly higher than the state average.

When compared to other nearby elementary schools in the Citrus School District, such as Rock Crusher Elementary School, Inverness Primary School generally performs worse on key metrics like test scores and chronic absenteeism. The school's statewide ranking has also declined over the years, from a high of 577 out of 2,087 Florida elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 1,035 out of 2,256 in 2023-2024. While the school and district appear to be making efforts to address these challenges, such as increasing spending per student, more substantial changes may be necessary to improve student outcomes.

Open Quote My children have been going here for several years. My daughter is now in fourth grade and my son is in second. Due to zoning, we must get a waiver for the children to attend this school. (Thank goodness for daycare locations!) I love it here, the kids get a top notch education, and the teachers are great. I have never had a problem. They are very big on safety and the kids learning. I admit that a few of the teachers give a lot of homework, but in all actuality, I really appreciate that. I want my kids smart and ready for middle school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
