Somerset Gables Academy

Summary:

Somerset Gables Academy is a public charter elementary and middle school in Coral Gables, Florida, serving 473 students in grades K-8. This high-performing school consistently outshines the Miami-Dade district and the state of Florida in academic assessments, ranking among the top elementary schools in the state.

With a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade, Somerset Gables Academy boasts exceptional academic performance. In the 2023-2024 school year, 91% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 56% for Miami-Dade and 55% for Florida. In math, 85% of 3rd graders were proficient or better, outpacing the district's 65% and the state's 60%. The school's statewide ranking has steadily climbed, reaching the top 2.2% of Florida elementary schools in the most recent year.

While nearby schools like George W. Carver Elementary also perform exceptionally well, other local schools such as Sylvania Heights Elementary and Francis S. Tucker K-8 Center have significantly lower academic performance. Somerset Gables Academy's success is not solely dependent on socioeconomic factors, as it outperforms the district and state averages despite having a relatively low percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients. This consistent improvement and high achievement make Somerset Gables Academy a standout public school that could serve as a model for others in the region.

Open Quote Kindergarten students have intense schoolwork and homework. The administrators and the teachers make you feel like there is something wrong with your child if they don’t want to do this work. This school only cares about getting good grades on their standardized tests. If your child doesn’t perform well, they don’t want them there. Close Quote

Open Quote This is a terrible school. It is in a nice neighborhood, but that is the only thing nice about it. There is so much unnecessary pressure on the children. This school only focuses on getting an “A” on their standardized test, but the children aren’t learning basics. There is no real area for PE. Almost every flyer that I received had a grammatical error. Please do not send your children to this school! Close Quote

Open Quote Good teachers but poor planning, forecast and dishonesty from owner Academia. Academia makes promises to students and the community and does not deliver. They only care about the bottom line.,profits. This is not the neighborhood school they sold us on. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
