Summary:

James W. Sikes Elementary School is a public elementary school in Lakeland, Florida, serving 563 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Polk School District, which is ranked 57 out of 68 districts in the state.

Despite higher per-student spending compared to nearby schools, James W. Sikes Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Florida elementary schools, with a 1- to 3-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's diverse student population, with 47.78% White, 12.43% African American, and 34.64% Hispanic students, faces challenges such as high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 12.9% to 30.8% over the past few years. Academically, the school's test scores in English Language Arts, Math, and Science are generally below the Polk County and Florida state averages, though there have been some exceptions, such as higher 3rd grade proficiency rates in 2023-2024.

Compared to nearby schools like Valleyview Elementary and Highlands Grove Elementary, James W. Open Quote I'm sure the test scores are probably correct, however I have 2 grandchildren attending Sikes. They are doing wonderful and love their school. One makes straight A's and the other is making A's & B's. I think it's amazing what they have learned in such a short time. Keep up the great work teachers and staff! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
