Orange City Elementary School

Summary:

Orange City Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 615 students in grades PK-5 in Orange City, Florida, which is part of the Volusia District, ranked 36 out of 68 districts in the state with a 2-star rating.

While Orange City Elementary has a significantly higher chronic absenteeism rate ranging from 27.0% to 33.5% in recent years, much higher than state and district averages, the school also consistently underperforms the Volusia District and Florida state averages on test scores across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 5th grade science proficiency was 38% compared to 58% for the district and 53% for the state. Additionally, Orange City Elementary has a very high percentage of students, 65.21% to 80.14%, receiving free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than nearby schools like Debary Elementary and Ivy Hawn Charter School of the Arts.

The relatively lower spending per student at Orange City Elementary, between $7,776 and $9,242, may be a contributing factor to the school's underperformance compared to nearby higher-performing schools. Addressing the high chronic absenteeism rate, low test scores, and resource allocation challenges will be crucial for Orange City Elementary to improve student outcomes and provide a better educational experience for its students.

Open Quote I wish Volusia county would catch a clue. This school is run down and in the middle of a residential neighborhood. I HATE the fact that I am forced to send my babies to this C- rated school. I can't wait to move out of this school district. I have tried and tried to get a variance approved by the district to send my kids to Manatee Cove which, by the way, is closer to my house and a A+ rated school, and they have denied me. Pathetic. I bet all their kids go to A+rated schools. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
