Mary Lin Elementary School

Summary:

Mary Lin Elementary School is a high-performing public elementary school in Atlanta, Georgia, serving 628 students in grades K-5. This school stands out as it consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in the state, with exceptional academic achievement and a strong focus on supporting its diverse student population.

Mary Lin Elementary School's academic performance is truly exceptional, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science that significantly exceed the district and state averages. The school's statewide ranking of 6th out of 1,248 schools and a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger further highlight its academic excellence. This level of sustained high performance is noteworthy and suggests the school has effective teaching practices, strong leadership, and a supportive community. In comparison, nearby schools like Kindezi Old 4th Ward and The John Hope-Charles Walter Hill Elementary Schools have significantly lower proficiency rates across all subjects, underscoring Mary Lin's exceptional academic achievements.

Another key factor contributing to Mary Lin Elementary School's success is its socioeconomic diversity. The school has a relatively low percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients, ranging from 2.37% to 4.94% over the past few years, suggesting it serves a more affluent student population compared to the district and state averages. This is in contrast to nearby schools like Kindezi Old 4th Ward and The John Hope-Charles Walter Hill Elementary Schools, which have much higher rates of economically disadvantaged students. Additionally, Mary Lin's higher per-student spending and lower student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools may also contribute to its exceptional academic performance.

Open Quote I attended Mary Lin from 2002-2007. The school has changed a lot since then, I am sure–some for the better, some for the worse. When I was a student there, bullying was extremely common and nothing was done about it–except maybe telling off the bullied child and giving them a hard time about it. The teachers were hit or miss. I had AMAZING teachers, and I had emotionally abusive teachers—some of which DO still teach at the school. I think my experience was not the norm, but I do know others who suffered similarly. Ideally, the school has improved. Close Quote

Open Quote The school does well in general but the administration has poor leadership, communication, and advocacy skills. They are alienating the parent community. Close Quote

Open Quote The intown community and parent involvement is what makes Mary Lin superlative in so many ways. As many schools teach for tests, I have found Lin doing more to help my son become confident in his questioning as he examines the world. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
