Martinez Elementary School

Summary:

Martinez Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 750 students in grades PK-5 in Martinez, Georgia, which is part of the Columbia County School District. This high-performing school consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in the state, with a current statewide ranking of 168 out of 1,248 schools.

Martinez Elementary consistently outperforms the state and county averages in academic assessments, with 70.9% of 5th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 67.8% in the county and 48.2% statewide. The school also has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 13.7 to 14.6 over the past three years, and spends more per student ($8,592 in 2018-2019) compared to the state average. However, Martinez Elementary has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (around 50%) compared to the higher-performing nearby schools in the same district, such as Stevens Creek Elementary (16.33%) and Blue Ridge Elementary (39.47%).

While Martinez Elementary maintains a strong academic performance and consistently ranks among the top schools in Georgia, it faces some challenges related to its student population's socioeconomic status. The higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students at Martinez Elementary suggests that the school's success may be attributed to its effective utilization of resources and support for its students, despite the additional challenges it faces. This highlights the importance of adequate funding and resources for schools serving diverse communities.

Open Quote My daughters and my grand daughter attended Martinez Elementary. I found many of the teachers were helpful, were always willing to meet with me and give me instruction of how to help my daughters meet their full potential. There were a few that were not so helpful but it seemed that they were not at the school long. Many thanks to the caring teachers there. Both of my daughters completed college and are working in very challenging professions. My grand daughter is doing well also. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
