Demorest Elementary School

Summary:

Demorest Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Demorest, Georgia, part of the Habersham County School District. With 543 students, the school has consistently ranked in the top 30% of Georgia elementary schools over the past decade, currently ranking 290 out of 1,248 schools.

Demorest Elementary stands out for its strong academic performance, consistently outperforming the Habersham County and Georgia state averages on the Milestones Assessments across grades 3-5. For example, in 2023-2024, 66.3% of 3rd graders at Demorest were proficient or better in Math, compared to 46.7% in Habersham County and 45.4% statewide. Additionally, the school serves a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 63.9% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, yet still manages to outperform nearby schools like Woodville Elementary, Hazel Grove Elementary, and Fairview Elementary.

Demorest Elementary's success may be attributed to its higher spending per student, at $11,052 in 2018-2019 compared to the state average of around $10,000, as well as its lower student-teacher ratio of 13.3 students per teacher in 2022-2023, compared to ratios ranging from 10.9 to 14.6 at the nearby schools. These factors, combined with the school's consistent academic achievements, suggest that Demorest Elementary is a model for supporting economically disadvantaged students and providing a high-quality education.

Open Quote My son has been a student at Demorest Elementary for two years now, and I could not be more pleased. Both of his teachers have encouraged him to work hard and do his best, and everyone at the school is so friendly and excited that my son is there. The staff at the school truly works together as a team, and my son enjoys attending school each day to learn new things. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
